The Must Have Essentials for all Backpackers
Backpacking is one of those passage experiences that most of us would like to go through. It's a way to show that we are able to take care of ourselves in an unknown environment, an adventure, an experience of different cultures, all packed into one fun package. While it is a positive experience and we must embrace it as such, it is not as spontaneous as it sounds. In order for a complete success, we need to plan a little ahead.
The Absolute Essentials for going Backpacking
You are going to a foreign place with people speaking a foreign language. It is true that in most countries people understand English, but sometimes they do not. There are even cases of people who understand English but do not want to speak it - they believe that if you are visiting their country you should make an effort. Just in case you meet these people - you need to be prepared. A small conversational guide containing all the necessary phrases to get by will go a long way in helping you.
By the same logic, you will occasionally end up in an unplanned location. It will most likely be an exciting experience to remember later on, but that does not change the fact that you will need to get out of there somehow. If your conversational skills will not help you, the next best thing is a map. If you are tech-savvy, a GPS will be even better. If you do not have a GPS, you may need a compass to make sense of the map.
A flashlight and a multi-tool are two of the most needed things on a trip. They are among those little things that don't weigh much and yet help immensely. Flashlights can help you when you're lost in the dark, while multi-tools will prove a useful replacement for things that will take up much more space but you can't travel without. In the same way, matches can help you out in a lot of dodgy situations.
The First Aid Kit is the just-in-case mandatory tool that you hope you will not need and yet must have. Remember - hospitals are not to be found everywhere and if you stray off the main cities, you may find yourself in need of some medical care.
You may occasionally last for longer periods without food (although hopefully you won't need to) but water is something we can't do without. Make sure to maintain a fresh water supply available at all times.
Extras
You may want to pack more than the strictly necessary clothes and food. The fun but also sometimes annoying thing about backpack trips is that you sometimes end up in places where food is not available or where it is colder than the places you initially intended to go. If you are sure the trip will be kept under control, you may do without these - as long as you make sure to maintain a constant stock of food. But they will help you enjoy your trip a little more and worry a little less.
